Features favoring benign ulcer include: 1) small size; 2) mucosa surrounding ulcer base is not tumefactive; and 3) radiating rugal folds extend nearly all the way to the margins of the base; however, the gross criteria for separating benign gastric ulcers from malignant are not always reliable.
