Microscopically, they can show a variety of mesenchymal elements, including hyaline cartilage (shown here), fibro-connective tissue, smooth muscle, and adipose tissue in abnormal configurations. These mesenchymal elements are usually associated with cleft-like spaces lined by respiratory epithelium which represent entrapped airways.
