Giant Cell Arteritis : Elastic Stain
Normal Temporal Artery - Elastic Stain (Verhoeff's Van Gieson Stain): The image shows normal termporal artery stained with elastic stain. Note the intact, sharply defined internal elastic lamina (wavy black line) adjacent to tunica intima. Inflammation in giant cell arteritis targets elastic laminae. With elastic stain, one can see fragmentation, partial duplication, and loss of elastic lamina (see next few images). Image courtesy of: Dr. Ibrahim Zardawi; used with permission.
