Comments:
Epidemiology: Lipomatous hypertrophy of atrial septum (LHAS) occurs in adults (>50 yrs.) and shows weak association with obesity, female sex, and steroid use. It is usually an incidental finding in about 1% of autopsies. With modern imaging techniques, many cases are now diagnosed antemortem (2-8% of echocardiograms). The image shows trichrome stain highlighting entrapped cardiac myocytes within LHAS.
