Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy

Non-compaction cardiomyopathy, also referred to as Spongiform Cardiomyopathy, is a rare disorder that results from defective myocardial development during embryogenesis. The developing myocardial fibers form an interwoven meshwork which has spongy consistency. They undergo compaction during the course of normal development and transform to solid musculature found in normal heart. This process is particularly evident in the left ventricle. When this process is defective, it results in Non-compaction cardiomyopathy. Ventricular trabeculation is excessively prominent as can be seen in this image.
