Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma : Prognosis

Prognosis: The prognosis of dedifferentiated liposarcoma is comparable to but slightly better than that of other pleomorphic high-grade sarcomas. The prognosis highly depends upon the tumor location. There are conflicting reports about the influence of tumor grade and the extent of dedifferentiation on prognosis. However, the current recommendation is to grade the dedifferentiated component.

The overall recurrence rate is 40% but retroperitoneal tumors recur in almost 100% of cases when followed for more than 10 years. Distant metastases appear in 15-20% of patients, usually in lung (75% of cases; shown here) or liver (25%). The 5-yr mortality rate is 30% but goes much higher the longer the patients are followed. Death generally occurs due to the local effects of the tumor rather than distant metastases.
