Differential diagnosis of atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcoma (ALT/WDL):

There are a few cell types that mimic lipoblasts and can lead to a mistaken diagnosis of liposarcoma. These include: any cell with intracytoplasmic mucin, fixation artifact, signet ring adenocarcinomas, and signet ring melanoma (shown here). The correct diagnosis can be made by paying close attention to the clinical context, histologic background and use of selected immunohistochemical markers.

Other entities that may enter the differential diagnosis of ALT/WDL in certain locations include: subconjunctival orbital herniated fat and lipomatous solitary fibrous tumor.
