Intramuscular and intermuscular lipomas are common variants of lipoma that can be quite alarming clinically because of their deep location, relatively large size (up to 20 cm) and an infiltrating growth pattern. They are sometimes also referred to as infiltrating lipomas. This image shows mature adipocytes diffusely infiltrating skeletal muscle.
