Lipoma : Chronic Inflammation

Secondary Changes in Lipomas: Trauma, compromised blood supply, and infection can produce secondary changes in lipomas which are important to recognize so as not to confuse them with malignancy. These events may cause fat necrosis which is characterized by the formation of clusters of foamy macrophages around adipocytes, multinucleated giant cells and chronic inflammatory infiltrate (shown here). Dystrophic calcification and cystic changes due to liquefaction of fat may also occur.
