Liver Cell Adenoma : Classification

LCA's have recently been classified into 4 types based on A) the presence of HNF1-alpha or beta-catenin mutations, and B) the presence or absence of an inflammatory infiltrate. 1) Tumors with mutations of HNF1-alpha gene. They are most common and make up between 30% and 50% of all LCA's and typically show steatosis (as in the example shown here); 2) Tumors with beta-catenin mutation. They tend to have cytologic abnormalities and may show areas with histologic features intermediate between LCA and well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma; 3) Tumors without HNF1-alpha or beta-catenin mutations but showing prominent inflammatory infiltrate; 4) Tumors without mutations or an inflammatory component.
