Xanthogranulomatous Cholecystitis: Microscopically, the gallbladder wall is thickened from xanthogranulomatous inflammatory response and fibrosis. Note the total destruction of mucosa and muscularis propria in this image. Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis may be associated with grossly inapparent carcinoma. Therefore, thorough sampling is advisable.
