Chronic Calculous Cholecystitis: The degree of inflammation in chronic cholecystitis is variable. Note that normal gallbladders at autopsy from individuals who have died of unrelated causes may show sparse aggregates of lymphoid cells in the lamina propria. In chronic cholecystitis, the infiltrate is predominantly lymphocytic with small numbers of plasma cells and histiocytes. The infiltrate may be limited to mucosa or it may be transmural.

This image shows inflammation extending beyond the muscularis. A few Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses are also present.
