Chronic Calculous Cholecystitis: Most patients with chronic cholecystitis have gallstones. The demographics, associated risk factors, and clinical presentation are the same as those for cholesterol gallstones. The exact pathogenesis is not fully understood. The presence of gallstones causes repeated bouts of mucosal trauma followed by inflammatory and reparative changes. The gallbladder wall in this image is considerably thickened. The lumen is filled with numerous mixed cholesterol stones.
