Image Description
This PAS-stained photomicrograph shows a granule surrounded by suppurative inflammation in a mycetoma caused by Madurella mycetomatis which is responsible for "black grain mycetoma."
The infection is usually localized, although it may sometimes involve underlying fascia as well as bone. The fungus enters the body through a traumatic wound. Image courtesy of: Dr. Lucille K. Georg, CDC Public Health Image Library.
