Image Description
Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) consists of localized and generalized forms. In the localized form, sun-exposed areas of the body such as head and neck are predominantly affected. In the generalized form, lesions are also usually present on arms, hands, fingers and non-exposed areas such as trunk, upper limbs, the palms and soles.
Systemic disease develops in only about 1% of localized forms of DLE but in as many as 5% of generalized DLE cases. Patients with generalized DLE who have persistent anemia, leukopenia, false-positive Wasserman reaction, and high-titer anti-nuclear antibody are more likely to develop full-blown systemic lupus erythematosus.
