Comments:
PROGNOSIS: Gliomatosis peritonei is considered to be a grade 0 teratoma (according to the WHO grading system for immature teratomas). With rare exceptions, it behaves in a benign fashion, has a good prognosis, and should not be overtreated; however, both the surgeon as well as the pathologist must adequately sample the peritoneal implants to rule out the presence of any immature elements, which would worsen the prognosis. Over time, the gliomatous nodules may become fibrotic, remain asymptomatic and persist, or undergo malignant transformation to gliomas in rare cases.
