Comments:
Occasionally, goblet cell carcinoids may show loss of mucin in association with inflammation. In the focus shown here, numerous goblet cells have been replaced by non-mucinous columnar cells. The histogenesis and pathogenesis of GCC's is not yet fully understood. Their clinical behavior is closer to that of adenocarcinoma than classic carcinoid. Yet there is no adenoma-carcinoma sequence in GCC's unlike conventional adenocarcinomas of the colon and appendix.
