Electron microscopy reveals characteristic rhomboid or trapezoid electron-dense membrane-bound granules within the cisterns of Golgi complex in juxtaglomerular cell tumors. These structures represent immature renin "protogranules." The more mature granules in the cytoplasm have round or irregular shapes.
