Squamous cell carcinomas constitute 1%-1.5% of all upper urinary tract malignancies. The vast majority of upper urinary tract cancers are urothelial carcinomas. Among non-urothelial cancers of the renal pelvis, squamous differentiation is most common (20%), followed by sarcomatoid, glandular, clear cells, lipid-rich, micropapillary and inverted subtypes. Admixture of more than one pattern is not uncommon. This mage shows a large squamous cell carcinoma involving upper two-thirds of the kidney. The tumor was centered in the renal pelvis but invaded the renal parenchyma. The next four images are from this case.
