The eosinophilic type of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma can be confused with oncocytoma because both neoplasms have abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and tend to have relatively uniform round nuclei. Careful examination reveals typical chromophobe renal cell carcinoma features including perinuclear halos, distinct cell borders and several cells void of nuclei in the plane of section.
