Comments:
Urothelial carcinoma-in-situ (CIS) is a discohesive lesion and readily sheds surface neoplastic cells as seen here. The biopsy procedure itself and the handling of the specimen in the laboratory may also contribute to the denudation of surface urothelium. Note the preservation of the neoplastic cell lining in the trough of the mucosal folds and its denudation from the crests.
