Gonadoblastoma : Malignancy

Malignancy in Gonadoblastoma: Gonadoblastoma is a benign tumor but it is considered to be a precursor lesion for invasive germ cell tumor (GCT) of dysgenetic gonads. Almost 50% of cases will develop an invasive GCT, usually a dysgerminoma (80-90% of cases; shown in this image). The malignant GCT may completely obliterate gonadoblastoma, leaving only calcified areas behind as a clue to its origin. Less frequently, the invasive GCT is embryonal carcinoma, yolk sac tumor, teratoma, or choriocarcinoma. Presence of coarse calcifications in an invasive GCT of the ovary raises the possibility that it arose in a gonadoblastoma.
