Comments:
Gross Pathology: In the pure form, ovarian carcinoids are unilateral with a size ranging from 3 to 10 cm and a smooth or bosselated external surface. The cut surface is firm, solid with a homogenous yellow-tan color.

When arising within a mature cystic teratoma, they appear as a solid yellowish-brown nodule within the wall of a cyst (as shown in this image). Rare examples are extensively cystic or have a glistening surface if there is a prominent mucoid component. Patients with carcinoid syndrome have generally large tumors (> 7cm). Necrosis and hemorrhage are uncommon.
