Comments:
Synovial sarcoma involving a kidney in a 43 y/o female. The nephrectomy specimen shows beige-colored tumor with multifocal necrosis. Microscopic examination showed monophasic fibrous synovial sarcoma with extensive intravascular growth into renal vein. The diagnosis was confirmed by detecting the characteristic chromosomal translocation t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2) in tumor tissue.

Primary synovial sarcomas of the kidney are extremely rare but have been described in the literature. The possibility of metastasis from synovial sarcoma arising at another location must be considered and ruled out clinically and by imaging studies. Image copyright: pathorama.ch
