Squamous cell carcinomas of the lung usually arise centrally in a main or lobar bronchus. Some cases have a prominent endobronchial polypoid or papillary component (as shown here). The resulting obstruction of the bronchial lumen can lead to atelectasis, obstructive bronchopneumonia, and bronchiectasis.
