Zona reticularis lies deep to zona fasciculata and abuts on the medulla in the head and body of the gland. Cells are arranged in anastomosing cords and have acidophilic granular cytoplasm and round vesicular nuclei with punctate nucleoli. Zona reticularis is responsible for glucocorticoid and sex hormone synthesis.   return to Adrenal Histology
