AITL : Relationship with EBV
Comments:
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can be detected in 80% to 90% of lymph nodes affected by angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL). Epstein-Barr encoding region (EBER) in-situ hybridization is the method of choice for detecting EBV. The virus is present in transformed B-cells in a concentration of 1 in 10 to 1 in 500 cells. In contrast, healthy EBV carriers have 1 in million to 1 in 10 million cells with the virus. EBV is not involved in the pathogenesis of AITL. It's presence is thought to be secondary to the immunodeficient status of AITL patients.
