Prostatic Adenocarcinoma - Extraprostatic Extension

Topic: Adenocarcinoma of Prostate

Category: Prostate

slide 20 of 24

Comments:
In this image, malignant glands are seen infiltrating periprostatic adipose tissue. This is an example of extraprostatic extension (EPE). The presence of cancer within skeletal muscle fibers is not diagnostic of EPE since skeletal muscle fibers often extend into the peripheral portion of the prostate anteriorly and apically. Similarly, the presence of tumor adjacent to pigmented epithelium in a biopsy does not equate to EPE unless the biopsy is specified as coming from seminal vesicle. Cancer invading ejaculatory duct may appear similar in a biopsy sample.   return to Adenocarcinoma of Prostate
