Comments:
Infectious mononucleosis caused by Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) produces tonsillar enlargement and lymphadenopathy in children and young adults. Initially, there is follicular hyperplasia with aggregates of monocytoid B-cells and epithelioid histiocytes. This is followed by expansion of paracortex. The lymph node and tonsillar architecture (shown here) is distorted but not completely effaced.
