High-grade Serous Carcinoma

slide 100 of 112

Comments:
Some cases of high-grade serous ovarian carcinomas show solid, endometrioid-like, and transitional (SET) patterns. The tumor in this image resembles papillary urothelial carcinoma. Such cases are more frequently associated with BRCA1 or BRCA2 germline mutations (50% of cases). This feature is seen less frequently in sporadic serous carcinomas (25% of cases). It may also be associated with sporadic mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2.

As compared to the classic serous carcinomas, the patients whose tumors show SET patterns are younger, are associated with a lower frequency of serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma and have more favorable prognosis. Other features include: tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, lower frequency of papillary/micropapillary architecture, and comedonecrosis.
