Renal medullary carcinoma is an exceedingly rare renal neoplasm that is usually seen in young African-American males with Sickle cell trait. Rare cases have been noted in the setting of sickle cell disease or hemoglobin SC disease. It is a poorly-circumscribed tumor with satellite nodules often infiltrating adjacent renal parenchyma as shown here. The tumor arises from the terminal collecting ducts and some consider it to be an aggressive variant of collecting duct carcinoma.
