Dilated cardiomyopathy refers to weakening and subsequent dilatation of the myocardium. The image shows biventricular dilatation of the heart and a thrombus at the apex of the left ventricle. The causes of dilated cardiomyopathy are many and include toxic, metabolic, and infectious agents as well as previous myocardial infarction.
