Atypical Carcinoid : Thymus

Topic: Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Mediastinum

Category: Mediastinum

slide 5 of 7

Comments:
Central necrosis, coarse calcifications and increased mitotic activity are frequently seen in thymic carcinoids. Therefore, if one were to apply to thymic carcinoids the histologic criteria used on bronchial carcinoids, majority of them would be classified as atypical carcinoids. This is further supported by the fact that as a group, thymic carcinoid is a more aggressive tumor than bronchial carcinoid.   return to Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Mediastinum
