This image shows small thyroid follicles with scant amount of colloid. Lymphocytic infiltrate is distributed within and around the lobules. The lymphocyte population is polyclonal and consists mainly of T cells. The susceptibility to Hashimoto thyroiditis has been linked to polymorphisms of certain immune-regulation associated genes (CTLA4 and PTPN22).   return to Thyroiditis
