Small cell carcinomas of the prostate are histologically similar to those arising in the lung and other sites. Scant cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei impart a basophilic appearance to the tumor. Pure small cell carcinoma of the prostate is not assigned a Gleason grade. If it is admixed with conventional prostate cancer, the acinar component is assigned a Gleason grade.
