Comments:
Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) is a rare, unique tumor of the appendix showing both neuroendocrine as well as glandular differentiation. The pathologic classification of GCC followed on this site was proposed by Tang et al (Am J Surg Pathol 2008; 32:1429-1443). Accordingly, the image shown here depicts a typical GCC (Group A). There are well-defined clusters of goblet cells in the lamina propria. There is no cytologic atypia and no desmoplasia in response to the tumor. The tumor usually involves the appendiceal wall circumferentially and along the length of the appendix. Majority of the tumors are greater than 2 cm in size.
