This field shows a high-grade sarcoma. No recognizable carcinomatous areas can be seen. The tumor cells are highly pleomorphic with atypical mitotic figures. Recurrence rate for sarcomatoid carcinoma of the esophagus is about 20%. Metastasis to lymph nodes occurs occasionally and may contain only epithelial elements, a combination of epithelial and sarcomatoid elements, or only the sarcomatous component.
