 Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Back to External Genitalia | Return to Genitourinary Tract
1: Penis : Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Comments: This is an example of moderately-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma arising in an uncircumcised elderly male with phimosis. Lack of circumcision with poor hygiene leading to smegma retention appears to be a major risk factor for penile cancer.
2: Penis : Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Comments: The tumor is extending finger-like projections into the underlying dermis. Rare dyskeratocytes are also seen. A recent study has suggested that depth of invasion (measured from the basement membrane of squamous epithelium to the deepest invasive cancer cells) and vascular invasion are predictors of cancer progression in penile squamous cell carcinoma. Mod Pathol 2001 Oct; 14(10): 963-8.
