1: Yolk Sac Tumor : Microcystic Pattern
Comments: Yolk sac tumor accounts for more than 80% of testicular germ cell tumors in children. It displays an amazing variety of architectural patterns. The most common is microcystic pattern as shown here. Interconnecting cords and ribbons of tumor cells are surrounded by abundant myxoid stroma.
2: Yolk Sac Tumor : Microcystic Pattern
Comments: Intracellular vacuoles and microcystic areas may sometimes resemble lipoblasts; however, the tumor cells do not contain lipid. Microcystic pattern often coexists with other architectural patterns.
3: Yolk Sac Tumor : Microcystic Pattern
Comments: The tumor cells have vesicular nuclei with punctate nucleoli. Wisps of myxoid material are seen in cystic spaces. This accounts for gelatinous appearance on cut surface of the tumor.
4: Yolk Sac Tumor : Myxomatous Pattern
Comments: Myxomatous pattern of Yolk Sac Tumor shows neoplastic stellate, spindle, or epithelioid cells in abundant myxoid stroma. Many of these cells are pluripotential and can form skeletal muscle, cartilage, and bone. Such areas should not be confused with teratoma.
5: Yolk Sac Tumor : Schiller-Duvall Body
Comments: Schiller-Duvall body is a structure seen in the endodermal sinus pattern of yolk sac tumor. It consists of a central vessel surrounded by tumor cells – the whole structure being contained in a cystic space often lined by flattened tumor cells.
6: Yolk Sac Tumor : Hepatoid Pattern
Comments: Seen in about 20% of yolk sac tumors, it consists of sheets of polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Hyaline globules (seen in abundance in this image) are a common feature. Bile canaculi also may be seen in hepatoid foci.
7: Yolk Sac Tumor : Solid & Microcystic Pattern
Comments: The solid pattern of yolk sac tumor often coexists and merges with microcystic areas as seen here.
8: Yolk Sac Tumor : Solid Pattern
Comments: The solid pattern of yolk sac tumor consists of sheets of uniform tumor cells with clear or pale pink cytoplasm. It may be confused with seminoma; however, it lacks the fibrous septa with lymphoid infiltrate seen in seminoma.
